Pilonidal Sinus
A pilonidal sinus is a small opening or tract in the skin, usually in the cleft between the buttocks near the tailbone. It can remain quiet or become inflamed and infected.
पायलोनाइडल साइनस — नितंबों की दरार के पास, रीढ़ की अंतिम हड्डी के करीब त्वचा में बनने वाले छेद या मार्ग को पायलोनाइडल साइनस कहते हैं। संक्रमण होने पर दर्द और सूजन हो सकती है।
What you may notice
- Painful swelling near the tailbone
- Redness and warmth of the skin
- Pus or blood-stained discharge
- A small pit or opening in the cleft of the buttocks
लक्षणों की तीव्रता हर मरीज में अलग हो सकती है। लक्षण लगातार बने रहें तो चिकित्सकीय जांच कराना उचित है।
Why it can happen
- Hair and friction in the natal cleft
- Prolonged sitting and local pressure
- Sweating and skin irritation
- Higher body weight and a deep natal cleft may increase risk

How it is evaluated
Diagnosis is usually clinical. The doctor checks the skin opening, swelling and signs of infection and assesses whether the condition is an acute abscess or a chronic sinus.
लक्षणों और चिकित्सकीय जांच के आधार पर निदान किया जाता है। आवश्यकता के अनुसार डॉक्टर अतिरिक्त जांच या इमेजिंग की सलाह दे सकते हैं।
What treatment may involve
If an abscess has formed, drainage may be required. Chronic or recurrent disease may need a planned procedure to remove or treat the sinus. Keeping the area clean and dry and following after-care advice can reduce recurrence risk.

- Fever with severe pain or swelling
- Rapidly enlarging lump
- Extensive redness or spreading infection
- Recurrent discharge that does not settle
